Court marriage is a legally valid marriage solemnized under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Unlike traditional marriages that follow religious customs and rituals, court marriage is conducted before a Marriage Officer appointed by the government.

Once the marriage is registered, the couple receives a legally valid marriage certificate that serves as official proof of marriage across India.

Who Can Apply for Court Marriage?

To register a court marriage in India, both parties must satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

The groom must be at least 21 years old.
The bride must be at least 18 years old.
Both individuals must give their free and voluntary consent.
Neither party should have a living spouse at the time of marriage.
The couple must not fall within prohibited degrees of relationship unless permitted by applicable law.
